Pre-K

Meet The Teacher
Mrs. Sinea Pies

Sinea Pies comes to us with years of experience working in Christian education. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in the college of Education. For fourteen years, she was a core leader of the Kids Krusade childrens ministry at Faith Temple church where they taught the Word of God to children ages 4-13 through drama, puppetry, stories and games.

As a Christian educator, Mrs. Pies held the position of Director of Guidance for 10 years at the Charles Finney School in Penfield and as the Administrative Director of Destiny Christian School in Brighton for 4 years. A wife, mother (5), grandmother (12) and great-grandmother (5), She has a deep love for children and a passion for helping them grow up to fulfill God’s purpose for their lives. She is very excited to be able to work with your children this coming school year at the Home School Academy.

Our Pre-K class was first launched in 2013-2014. Our young students hopped through the alphabet throughout the year doing various fun activities correlating to each letter!

A is for Ant (we had a real ant hill), B is for Butterfly (real butterflies came to the school) C is for Cat (no real cats but we did decorate a Cat-shaped cookie!) and on and on to Z is for Zebra.

One the best themes was O for Olympics, in light of the Winter Olympics. The class re-enacted Olympics races (running, not skiing) and had their own medal ceremony. Every student had a chance to experience what it was like to win a medal, as we only had 3 runners per race!

One of the most popular events of each class day is Show and Tell. Students practice public speaking skills and listening skills as they take turns being an attentive audience or expressive speaker. We have such a great time!

Special Note from Mrs Pies:  Our classroom would be so very blessed if you would send in a package of unscented BABY WIPES for the class to use. I cannot tell you how helpful it is to grab a wipe and clean some messy hands or a little unexpected spill.

ALL PreK students will need a water bottle - prefilled at home with water - that is labeled with their name. This is in addition to any juice boxes that you will be including for snacks or lunchtime.

SNACKS - we will have a mid morning snack in our school day. You would be amazed at how extra-hungry our little kiddos can get at school. I would suggest that part of their snack include some kind of protein (i.e. a cheese stick or rolled up slice of turkey - something of that nature) Protein sticks with them longer. If most of our students will be staying after school for clubs, we will add an afternoon snack for everybody, as well. We will know more by Meet The Teacher day on Sept 6th and I will let you know.

Overview
Each year children enrolled in the Pre-K program at HSA will learn how to follow directions, practice fine motor and gross motor skills, practice creative and dramatic play, and be introduced to working within a classroom community.

While much of your child’s learning will involve play, this is not a play group.  Each week there will be planned activities including circle time (calendar, weather, etc..); a story; a craft; music; games; snack & lunch; outdoor time; and quiet time.

Half-day option is available for the preschool class.  The teacher to child ratio for preschool will be 1:5 with a maximum of 15 students.  We are still in process of choosing our curriculum for this class, but it will focus on character building, history, holidays, and/or science.  It will not be phonics or math based.

Enrollment Requirements/Expectations for Pre-Kindergarten students:

* This class is primarily for children who are 3 1/2 to 4 years old.  Children must be at least 3 by Sept. 1 and be completely potty trained to apply for enrollment.  There will be periodic bathroom breaks throughout the day, so children who are potty trained should not have any problems.  Three year olds who enroll will be placed on a trial basis to see if they are really ready.  Please note that this Pre-K class is a service for families who have other children in HSA or for those who plan to home school and participate in HSA in the future, as we are definitely not prepared to take on a major preschool venture!

One of the very fun special PreK events in previous years...

Fire Safety Day

We saw all that our fire fighters have to do just to get DRESSED to go to a fire.

Two of our little students got to dress in fire fighter outfits, too.
We learned that we do not have to be afraid if a fireman comes to help us looking like this
He's not scary. He is there to help!

Our little "fire fighters."
