The Primary 1 class day includes lots of fun learning through stories, visuals, hand's on projects, and imaginative play. The students will stay in one classroom and have an awesome time growing and learning together.
In order to be in this class, your child:
- Should be able to recognize letters, numbers, and simple words and be engaged in the process of learning to read and write (using at least a 1st grade curriculum), so that if the students are asked to copy a word or sentence, he/she is willing to try. Our goal by the time they leave this class (after one or two years) is for them to be comfortable writing a sentence on their own (not copying).
- Should be able to cut, color neatly, and be able to use their fine motor skills.
- Should be able to sit and listen to the teacher for 15-20 minutes.
- Should be able to work independently for 5 minutes and wait for help.
Meet the Teachers
Mrs. Kiley Farwell and Mrs. Jen Atkinson will be co-teaching in the Primary 1 class for 2016-2017
Mrs.
Kiley Farwell and her husband, Mike, have been married for 17 years
and are so thankful for their five children, ages 13 - 3. She
received her BA degree in Christian Education and Bible from Houghton
College. It has been a blessing to utilize that training to volunteer
countless hours in leadership and serving in various youth and
children's ministries within the church.
Mrs.
Farwell has been homeschooling her children for nine years. She has
found that using an eclectic mix of curriculum along with engaging a
variety of different learning styles makes for the best learning
environment in her home. Like many homeschool moms, she is learning
(again!) right alongside her children. As a family, the
Farwells enjoy camping, biking, hiking, and reading great books.
In her free time, you'd likely spot Mrs. Farwell at the thrift store
with a cup of coffee, or sewing, creating, and upcycling her thrifty
finds for use in her home.
After
working as an assistant teacher in the first grade classroom last
year along with Mrs. Atkinson, Mrs. Farwell is excited about the
opportunity to invest her time and energy at HSA full-time. She
is eager to bring her love of learning and creativity to engage the
first grader's natural curiosity and joy in discovering all about
God's amazing world. She cannot wait to meet your child!
My
name is Jen Atkinson. I'm happily married to my husband of 18+ years,
mom to seven, foster mom and a pastor's wife. We live on a mini farm
in Churchville where we have homeschooled for the last 9 years. I
absolutely love children and I'm very excited to help teach your
little one this year!
