Writing 6A and 6B

Meet The Teacher
Mrs. Holly Weaver
Writing/Literature (GRADES 6A and 6B)

Holly Weaver is a certified teacher for grades k-12. She graduated from Oral Roberts University with her Bachelors degree in elementary education and then from SUNY Geneseo with her masters as a Reading Specialist for k-12.

After teaching various grades between kindergarten through high school for 10 years in the public schools, she is now teaching her own little class of 5 kids at home! She currently lives in Rush with her husband, Tylere, and her five children, ages 1-8 years old. They all enjoy their "hobby" farming with various animals and lots of gardening. Holly has a passion for both reading and writing as well as hiking, gardening, and doing pretty much anything outdoors.

EXPECTATIONS:
This writing/literature class is designed to enhance what is already being taught in your home-school program. With limited time each week, we want to focus more on the skill & technique rather than the mechanics of writing.
Students are expected to come to class with a basic understanding of grammar appropriate for their grade level.  The sixth grade constants (the things that are expected to be correct in every piece of work turned in) are as follows:
Sixth Grade Six Constants
  • Students will write complete sentences with correct capitalization, appropriate ending punctuation and verb agreement.
  • Students will not use contractions, “you”, numerals, or text language in their written work.
  •  Students will use a variety of sentences in their work.
  • All work will be double spaced whether typed or hand written.  Handwritten paper must be legible.
  • Students will spell commonly used words correctly (Do not depend on spell check functions; “there” and “their” are both spelled correctly)
  • For most assignments, a paragraph should be six to eight sentences

Primary Grades 6A and 6B

From Mrs. Weaver:  I am looking forward to an interactive writing/literature class with the 5th and 6th graders as we explore various types of writing together! We plan to focus on several genres of literature such as biographies/autobiographies, historical fiction, drama, fantasy, nonfiction, realistic fiction, folktales/fables, and poetry.  We will grow in our understanding of these genres, become familiar with several pieces of literature and authors for each, and even try our hand at writing our own!  We will explore some writing by authors such as Anne Frank, Shel Silverstein, Gary Paulsen, Charles Dickens, and many more.

I hope the students will gain an appreciation for some of these genres, a personal preference, or even a love for some of these great reads!  I plan to cover 2 genre units per quarter.  Every week, the students will be given a journaling assignment that pertains to the current unit.  And each week there will be an additional writing assignment also based on the type of writing we are learning.  The fun part about this class is that each student will have the opportunity to share their writing with the class at the end of each unit!  By the end of the year, students will have completed 8 writing projects for their writing portfolio.  There is no required textbook for the class, but students will need at some points throughout the year, to choose a piece of literature (such as a poem or a biography, a nonfiction topic, etc.) from the library or their own shelves to use.

Supplies:
I do ask that each student bring a folder for me to keep as a portfolio folder for their writing pieces , a notebook to use for their journal, and a three ring binder for current projects/handouts.  I will handout a mini-syllabus at the beginning of each quarter with the genre unit and the homework assignments/writing projects for that quarter.
