History 2 & 3

MEET THE TEACHER
Mrs. Maureen Mahoney
History Grades 2 & 3

Maureen Mahoney is delighted to serve this year as the Home School Academy’s History instructor for Grades 2-3.  Prior to becoming a mom, Maureen was a public school teacher for nine years and a principal for one year.  Then the Lord blessed Maureen and her husband Dan with 7 children in 8 years, and she has had the pleasure of  home schooling each of them, since the beginning.  For the past 10 years, Maureen has had the opportunity to teach nearly all subjects at a variety of home school co-ops. Maureen is also certified from the Commission of Ireland, as a TCRG Irish Dance teacher.  Maureen runs several Irish step dancing classes in Wolcott, Jordan, and Cato.  Maureen is also an adjunct professor for the Finger Lakes Community College.  She is honored to become a part of the wonderful Home School Academy and is very happy to serve you in any way possible.

Welcome to the Home School Academy
Grade 2 and 3 History Class!

First Quarter: Government and Geography
Our main focus for the first quarter will be for the students to learn how the United States government operates.  They will learn how the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of government work together to form our democracy.  Class time will be a very hands-on approach to learning. The students will doing things such as: electing members of Congress, electing a class president, creating their own bills, and attempting to pass new classroom “laws.”  The students will learn how we elect our leaders; the rights and responsibilities of voting; the differences between local, state, and national government; and more.

The students will also be learning about world geography, United States geography, and weekly calendar work.  They will learn by singing fun songs about the continents, oceans, and the tour of the states.  Students will be creating their own topographical map of the United States and will identify major land forms and where our nation’s capital is located.

Second, Third, Fourth Quarters: Ancient World History
For the remaining three quarters, students will join on an adventure as we travel back in time to study Ancient Civilizations! We will start all the way back with the Story of Creation; we will complete cave drawings with the First Nomads; make pyramids with the Egyptians; have a tea party in China; drum along with friends from Ethiopia in Africa; participate in the first Olympic games in Greece; build an ice cream Greek boat to sail the Mediterranean Sea; build an aqueduct with the Romans; write on an Athenian wax tablet; to name just a few of our fun adventures.

We will be compiling a personal journal noting our experiences in visiting specific ancient lands.  We will be learning about their geography, culture, and history.  We will be “traveling” to these locations to learn about their art, music, education, and interesting facts. Students will be traveling back in time and all across the entire world, so get your passports ready and bags packed!

Please note that HSA is a 28 week program. This is not a complete history curriculum for your child. This is a supplement to what you teach at home. Be sure that you are also teaching world history or ancient history at home.
